The glider chair has come a long way, baby
One of my most tedious nursery purchases nearly six years ago, was our glider. I went with that ubiquitous glider brand, whose styles were just...not me. It did the job of course, but it never made me happy to look at and it didn't feel right when the nursery was no longer nursery.

If you're looking for a beautiful modern glider, and you're willing to invest in something that will be part of your decor longer than that baby will be a baby, there are a few really beautiful options out there now.
Dwell Studio's Savoy Glider (at Arte Bebe, shown at top) comes in lots of fabric options from subtle solids to their trademark big dot patterns. It will fit right in with the rest of your decor; in fact it hardly looks like a glider at all. It might be worth it to invest in an ottoman too, when you've got a glider with a lower back like this one.

Monte designs makes several modern nursery rockers and gliders, but I love the Grano glider because it's also a recliner, which I know my sigOth would have died for. Handmade in Canada, I love the lines and the higher back looks  super comfortable for nursing and lullaby singing at 3AM.

A little more affordable is Monte Designs' Alto rocker--although leather brings the price way up. Definitely for those who prefer their furniture chic to shabby chic.

The Jennifer Delonge glider has really feminine, pretty lines. I'd recommend the microsuede over the velvet, unless you want to be worried about the baby ruining the glider the very first week.

When it comes down to it, if you're going to spend this much on your glider, you'd better make sure you can actually put it to its intended use, right? Or heck, comb Craig's List and your local mom message boards plugging some of these brand names into the search--maybe you'll get lucky with a second-hand score, like our neighbors did with ours. -Liz
