Architectural jewelry: Joinery series earrings from Pico Designs
Your little girl might be too young to wield a power saw, but she can learn to appreciate the craft of woodworking at any age with, of all things, tiny architectural jewelry. I'm impressed by the Joinery Series earrings from Pico Design, which is designed to introduce girls to the concept of wood joinery. Four pairs of sterling silver studs featuring miter, dado, rabbet, and tongue and groove joints, all from Andrea Panico, an industrial-turned-jewelry designer and mother of a six-year-old daughter. She's on a mission to teach young girls about technical concepts in architecture and design and this is such a cool way to do it. The earring set even comes with an information card about woodworking in a stamped gift bag. And hey, if your daughter is not inspired to become an architect when she grows up, she'll at least have a leg up on her woodshop classmates when she gets to middle school.  (At least if you're okay spending $50 on "real jewelry" for her.) The site happens to be a great place to poke around for all kinds of gorgeous holiday gifts, whether you're shopping for a STEM-minded kid or not. In fact, if you're an adult aficionados of modern architecture, definitely check out the Frank Lloyd Wright Jewelry Collection. Pico Design partnered with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to bring Wright's iconic designs to life -- well, to the wrist, neck, and ear, at least. Some of my favorite pieces are from the Oak Park, Florida Southern College, and Guggenheim jewelry collections which are educational too. Before browsing the shop, I had even forgotten that Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. (I know, I can probably be stoned for that living in the NYC area.) As a bonus, proceeds from the Frank Lloyd Wright Jewelry Collection support programs of the foundation--a win for architectural buffs and modern jewelry lovers alike. Find heirloom-quality architectural jewelry for women, men, and girls at Pico Design. Plus, check our archives for more jewelry ideas.

Eyewear that brings life to the party

At some point, most of us have accepted an inconvenient truth: reading glasses are now part of the outfit. They live on the nightstand, in the kitchen, next to the computer, and somehow always disappear precisely when we need them. But d…
