Father's Day is a joyful day. We love honoring all the outstanding dads, stepdads, and granddads in our lives in all the wonderful ways we can.
But this year feels different.
With the world's attention trained on the families being torn apart at our borders as a matter of new government policy, we can't help but think of how many good fathers are suffering so much right now. They've come here seeking legal asylum, overcoming long and dangerous journeys, escaping atrocities in their homelands, all just trying to make a better life for their kids.
Some have even been here living productive lives for decades and raising wonderful families, yet are finding themselves suddenly detained and separated from their children with threats of deportation.
These are policies being condemned by lawmakers, by civil rights advocates, by the United Nations, and by doctors including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Physicians and the American Psychiatric Association.
And of course, by us. Because it's wrong.
